Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Teddington Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Teddington is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and delivery activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risk, preventing injury and protecting property during all man and van and household or office moving services.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We recognise our responsibility to manage health and safety as an integral part of our operations. Our aims are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, to comply with relevant health and safety legislation, and to promote a positive safety culture throughout our removal services.

Senior management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and reviewed. All workers, including temporary staff and subcontractors, are required to co-operate fully with this policy, follow safe systems of work and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others.

Responsibilities

Management will:

Plan and organise work so that health and safety risks are identified and controlled, provide appropriate information, instruction and training to staff, supply and maintain suitable equipment, vehicles and protective gear, carry out regular risk assessments and reviews, and respond promptly to any health and safety concerns, incidents or near misses.

Employees and contractors will:

Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training, use equipment and vehicles correctly and for their intended purpose, report hazards, defects, incidents and near misses without delay, wear any personal protective equipment provided where required, and avoid any behaviour that could put themselves, colleagues, customers or the public at risk.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We conduct risk assessments for our removal and delivery activities, including manual handling, vehicle operations, loading and unloading, working at height when required, and work carried out at customer premises. These assessments help us identify potential hazards and put in place suitable control measures.

Safe systems of work are developed from these risk assessments and are communicated to all relevant staff. They cover, as a minimum, safe lifting and carrying techniques, safe stacking and securing of items in vehicles, safe use of ramps, trolleys and moving equipment, and procedures for working in confined or restricted spaces, stairwells and shared access areas.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a key part of our man and van and removal work. To reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other injuries, we will, where reasonably practicable, assess the weight, size and shape of items before moving them, use lifting equipment, trolleys and team lifts whenever appropriate, ensure staff are trained in correct posture and lifting techniques, avoid excessive carrying distances by planning loading and parking carefully, and refuse to move items that present an unacceptable risk where suitable control measures cannot be put in place.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are essential to our services and must be operated safely and responsibly at all times. We aim to ensure that all vehicles are regularly inspected and maintained, drivers hold the correct licences and are competent for the vehicles they operate, loads are secured safely to prevent shifting during transit, routes are planned to minimise risk, taking into account time, traffic and access restrictions, and drivers follow all road traffic laws and company rules on safe driving, including avoiding mobile phone use while driving.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

Our teams work at a wide range of residential and commercial premises. We have a duty to minimise risks to customers, visitors and the general public. We will assess access routes, stairs, corridors and doorways before starting work, take care to protect floors, walls and fixtures where reasonably practicable, control trip hazards by managing tools, packaging and equipment carefully, maintain clear communication with customers about access and any temporary restrictions, and act with courtesy and consideration for neighbours and other users of shared spaces.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risk assessments identify that additional protection is needed, personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear or high-visibility clothing will be provided. Staff are required to use this equipment in accordance with training and instructions, keep it in good condition, and report any damage or defects.

Training, Information and Supervision

We provide our staff with appropriate health and safety training related to their roles. This may include induction training, manual handling and lifting techniques, safe use of equipment and vehicles, emergency and incident procedures, and customer care and behaviour at client sites. Ongoing supervision and refresher training will be provided where necessary to maintain safe working practices and standards.

Accidents, Incidents and First Aid

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. We keep records of such events and investigate them to identify root causes and implement improvements. Basic first aid provisions are made available in our vehicles or on site, and staff are informed how to access assistance in the event of an emergency.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

We are committed to continuous improvement in our health and safety performance. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed periodically, or sooner where there are significant changes in legislation, our activities, or following a serious incident. Feedback from employees and customers is welcomed and will be used to improve our approach to safety during removals, deliveries and related services.

By following this Health and Safety policy, Man and Van Teddington aims to deliver reliable, professional and safe removal and man and van services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved.
